Prepare and set up plant and machinery

aim

This package covers all types of lift trucks found in the metals recycling industry. It includes counterbalance trucks, rough terrain masted, telescopic handlers, container handlers and sideloaders. For any given course only one truck type can be accommodated.

Relevant Training Session: H & S at work, Safety rules and procedures, rated capacity and safe working loads, machine familiarisation, battery care and maintenance, replenishment of the energy source, regular maintenance, adjustment of fork arms.

Learning Outcome: This unit is designed to confirm that the candidate is able to prepare and set up plant and machinery. It confirms that the candidate is able to carry out pre-shift checks and record and report the findings. It ensures that the candidate is able to replenish the machine’s energy source according to manufacturers’ instructions and comply with relevant H & S legislation. Similarly, the unit ensures that the candidate is able to check that relevant equipment for the plant is confirmed as fit for purpose.

Assessment: Trainees will be encouraged to build their skills by guided practice, culminating in a formal practical assessment, together with a knowledge questionnaire.

Health and Safety at Work

Employers’ duties and instructors’ and employees’ responsibilities under HASAWA, PUWER and LOLER. • How the ACoP relates to PUWER and the requirements of the ACoP. • Management of H & S Regulations 1992. • The importance of risk assessments and how they will be an integral part of the course. • Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992 in relation to lift truck operations. • The role of the H & S and EHO inspectors

Safety Rules and Procedures

• The safety rules and safe operating procedures relevant to lift trucks. • Relate rules and procedures to company risk assessments.

Battery Care and Replenishment of the Energy Source

• Understand how to recharge a traction battery. • Understand how to check a traction battery for defects. • Understand how to refuels a lift truck with either diesel or LPG (by exchange of cylinder or from bulk supply). • Understand the safety precautions relevant to replenishing the energy source; including PPE and COSHH risk assessment.

Maintenance

• The difference between daily maintenance checks and take-over checks. • The importance of the manufacturer’s handbook for specific detail. • The operator’s responsibility to report faults. • The need for a recording system.

Adjustment of Fork Arms

• Adjusting fork arm spread, risk assessment of task for manual handling. • Use of hydraulic controls.
