Operate plant and machinery to meet work requirements

aim

Relevant Training Session: H & S at work, safety rules & procedures, rated capacity & safe working loads, stability, machine familiarisation, operation of hydraulic controls, driving the machine, steering, handling pallets & loads, travelling on ramps, vehicle loading

Learning Outcome: This unit is designed to confirm that the candidate is able to operate the plant and machinery to meet work requirements. It confirms that the candidate is able to manoeuvre the machine in both open and confined spaces. It ensures that the candidate is able to monitor the equipment to maintain safety throughout the work activity, and carry out operations safely.

Assessment: Trainees will be encouraged to build their skills by guided practice, culminating in a formal practical assessment, together with a knowledge questionnaire.

Operating principles of the machine

• Principles of counterbalance. • Rated capacity and reasons. • Factors that affect rated capacity. • Maintaining truck stability – longitudinal and lateral. • Operator’s safety code.

Machine familiarisation

• The type of truck and the tasks it can be used for. • The design, layout and purpose of major components. • Position and use of rated capacity plate. • Mounting and dismounting safely. • Moving off, stopping in normal mode and in an emergency. • Use of all round observation before moving off or when changing direction, when turning and before moving any part of the machine.

Steering the machine (unladen and laden)

• In open areas. • In confined spaces. • Around various obstacles. • Steering in aisles with 90° approaches to left and right. • Lining up to pick up or set down loads in open areas, at vertical faces and in aisles, racking systems, etc.

Hydraulics

• Basic principles of hydraulic operating systems. • Safe travel and park positions. • Picking up and setting down various loads in open areas, at vertical faces, at various heights.
