Position the vehicle for loading and unloading of the skip

Learning Outcome: This unit is designed to confirm that the candidate is able to safely position the vehicle in order to unload or load a skip safely. It confirms that the candidate is able to manoeuvre the vehicle in both open and confined spaces. It ensures that the candidate is able to monitor the equipment to maintain safety throughout the work activity, and carry out operations safely.

Assessment: Trainees will be encouraged to build their skills by guided practice, culminating in a formal practical assessment, together with a knowledge questionnaire.

Safety Rules and Procedures

• The safety rules and safe operating procedures relevant to skip loaders. • Relate rules and procedures to company risk assessments. • Security of loads • Stability of ground conditions • Proximity hazards, power lines, tele lines etc • Dangers to the public and other road users • Dangers of reversing vehicles • Security of vehicle when parked for loading or unloading • Chocking of drive wheels/prevention of run-a-way vehicles • Factors that affect capacity. • Maintaining skip stability – longitudinal and lateral. • Cordoning of work area on public highways

Manoeuvres

• Use of all round observation before moving off or when changing direction, when turning and before moving the skip • In open areas. • In confined spaces. • Around various obstacles. • Lining up to pick up or set down skips in open areas, at vertical faces, in confined spaces and on the public highway
